According to tradition alta or Mahawar or Bengal Rose as it is variedly called is a red color dye used to adorn and decorate hands and feet of Indian women. It is an alternative to henna or mehendi and is one of the 16 mandatory ornaments for Indian Women or Solaah Shringaar.
